MTBS In-House Case Day

MTBS In-House Case Day

May 10, 13h-17h | Oude Haven, Rotterdam

Together with the Case Society the HonEURs Association hosted an In-House Day at the Maritime & Transport Business Solutions (MTBS).

The event started with an introduction of the MTBS by Senior Consultant Dirk van Niekerk and Manager Reinout Polders. The two introduced themselves and the company to the students. MTBS has around 30 employees and is active in Africa, Europa and the Middle East. In its projects, MTBS mainly consults firms and the public sector on financial, environmental and legal aspects.

Afterwards, the students were given a case and had only 90 minutes to come up with a solution to the given problem, which they had to present in a five-minute pitch. While solving their cases, Dirk and Reinout were ready to answer questions and even gave an office tour to every team. The students could even go to the rooftop, where they had an amazing view over the city center of Rotterdam.

Eventually, the students pitched their solutions to the case, which was about the profitability of a Western-African harbor. Dirk and Reinout subsequently fired questions at the students to test how thoroughly everyone understood the problem at hand. The event was concluded with MTBS’ traditional Friday-afternoon-drinks. The students could join and have a chat with the many consultants of the firm.

Thank you for having us, MTBS!

Masterclass on Public Diplomacy

HonEURs Masterclass on Public Diplomacy

May 17 | Clingendael Institute on International Relations

On May 17th, selected members of the HonEURs Association were able to receive an exclusive masterclass on Public Diplomacy by no one else than Dr. Etienne Augé, distinguished lecturer at Erasmus University and regular speaker at the Netherlands Institute of International Relations Clingendael. Visiting the institution was an experience in itself- located in a park in The Hague, one could feel the importance of that old traditional Dutch building. Before our members received a masterclass, we were introduced to the mission and vision of the institution and received some insights into the daily work. The Masterclass stressed the importance of storytelling and was spiced up with some personal anecdotes evolved around different diplomatic tools, ranging from the use of rankings (heard of tripadvisor?) and gastro diplomacy.

Thank you, Etienne Augé for this amazing opportunity!

Visit at Het Calamiteitenhospitaal Utrecht

Visit at Het Calamiteitenhospitaal Utrecht

May 16 I UMC Utrecht

After traveling to Utrecht with a small group and being introduced to our host, Bjorna Baans, a short presentation was given on what the Calamiteitenhospitaal does and how it operates. Thereafter, a very interesting and interactive tour through the hospital was given, where we went through the facilities as if we were a patient coming in. The tour started at the emergency entrance and ended at the quarantine section. At this last section, one of the students could put on a quarantine suit which was perceived as very interesting and ‘fun’ by the group. The event was entirely held in Dutch.

Trip to Geneva and United Nations

HonEURs Trip to Geneva and United Nations

April 17 – 19 | Geneva

Getting up at 3am to catch a plane to Geneva? No problem for

19 motivated students that joined us on our second HonEURs Trip to Geneva, Switzerland. The Gateway to the Alps, and home to renowned chocolate and watchmakers awaited!

The first day was all about getting to know the city and

enjoying the Swiss way of life- we closed the day with a typical cheese fondue, while enjoying our view over the lake.

Thursday was all about the UN! The HonEURs Association group had the honor to be hosted in the Palais des Nations. After a first presentation on the UN, we were shown around the building and explored different parts of the institutions. Our guide was able to give us some good insights!

After a quick lunch, we made our way to the World Health Organization where we got interesting insights into the global fight for health. This presentation was not only interesting for our participating students from the Medicine and

health department, but was discussed from all different viewpoints, including Communication, Economics and Business. After this session, we gathered again to

go back to the Palais de Nations, were we received a presentation by a representative of the UN Conference of Trade and Development. In this last session, we learned a lot about how the UN Trade Facilitation Agreement came

about, and its practical implications on global trade. The day was concluded by a nice social hangout in the evening.

The next day’s activities depended on personal interests.

While some people chose to explore the city of Geneva a bit more, a group of students was brave enough to climb up La Saléve, a summit in France overlooking Geneva. And the view was definitely worth it!

“For this year’s second HonEURs study trip, we went to the

beautiful Geneva to visit the United Nations. Walking around at the palaces of the United Nations was an amazing experience on its own but listening to various employees of the UN who were passionately telling what they do on a

daily basis to contribute to a better world made the day very memorable. Spending the days with a nice group of people all with their own stories was really fun too, which was greatly enhanced by the Swiss activities that we did

together, ranging from dining with cheese fondue to climbing a mountain together.”- Koen Polee

It was a great trip with amazing people.

It's Pub Quiz Time!

HonEURs Easter Brunch

Locus International Rotterdam

Last Tuesday around 30 members of the HonEURs Association met at Locus Publicus to test their knowledge in a Pub Quiz. After forming teams of around 5-6 students, every group named their team and the ‘competition’ started. In total, there were 30 questions ranging from geography to arts, sports and many more – a round of topics was covered. To solve the questions, teams were not allowed to use their phones and only had 30 seconds to answer – there was no room for long discussion! Eventually, ‘Gigi’s Girls’ could claim the title of the winner and prizes for themselves with an outstanding result of 26 correct answers. ‘Pi Jiu Dui’ and ‘InsertCoolNameHere’ followed with 24 and 20 points, respectively. The evening was guided by our Events Manager Lorena who also successfully dealt with very ambitious teams.

HonEURs Easter Brunch

HonEURs Easter Brunch

11:00 – 13:00 | BACKYARD Rotterdam

Last Sunday, the honors students met shortly before lunchtime to enjoy some amazing food and nice talks together. Even though it was not really Easter time yet, the association wanted to come together again before leaving off to Geneva. It was a nice and cozy moment before heading to our study trip in Switzerland.

In-House Day at Google Amsterdam

In-House Day at Google Amsterdam 08/03/2019

9:00 – 12:00 | Amsterdam Zuid

Last Thursday, the HonEURs Association had the unique opportunity to get an inside look into the facilities of Google Netherlands in Amsterdam.

The former Secretary of the HonEURs Association who currently is a B2B Marketing Intern at Google – Anne Dom – introduced us to Google and started testing our knowledge about the company through Kahoot!.
Besides some basic data about the company, we learned about some of the firm’s core values like diversity or transparency.
Shortly after, the current Product Marketing Manager, Tim van de Rijdt, talked about the firm’s switch from being rather desktop-oriented to now also be usable on smartphones. Currently, Google is mainly concerned with advancing Artificial Intelligence such as using voice search.
Our third speaker of the day just recently came to the Amsterdam Office from California. Avital Oliver, Senior Research Engineer working at Google Brain, broke down the complex technologies used at Google for us. He too elaborated on Artificial Intelligence, but also on robotics and on Machine Learning. Particularly for these topics questions about privacy arose, for which Avital assured us that this belongs to Google’s major concerns and is taken seriously.
Subsequently, the highlight of the in-house was about to come: an office tour. We could now see why Google belongs to the best places to work for: not only were there Micro-Kitchens with free food at every floor, but also relax rooms with massages and even a gym awaited us. The honours students were fascinated by the variety of working spaces and the generosity of the company.

To conclude our visit at Google Amsterdam, Anne informed us about student opportunities at Google and gradually our in-house day ended with one-on-one talks between students and speakers.

Thank you for having us, Google!

In Discussion: Female Leadership

17:30 - 19:30 | Theil Building CB-4

For International Women’s Day with the theme #BalanceforBetter we would like to shed light on women’s achievements and recap our recent panel discussion about female leadership. We were honored to host our discussion with four female leaders among who are entrepreneurs, executives and directors. Our participants were Carien van der Laan, Anoesjka Imambaks, Nienke Appels and Roelien Ritsema van Eck. Steffie Broere – coach & idea generator of the company ‘Extraordinary Life’ – guided us through the evening as our moderator. After an introduction by Carolina and Alexandra of the HonEURs Board the participants shortly introduced themselves and started sharing their experiences and opinions. Topics were, for instance, quotas or ‘informal rules’. Particularly for the latter one we found out about troubles women might run into when being a leader: offering a drink is seen as tricky. The reason for this is that others might mistakenly see one as ‘the coffee lady’ and not an equal counterpart to do business with. Sitting in the corner during a business meeting is another “don’t” to take into consideration. It seems to be about the subtle things that matter. While the participants shared their knowledge, there was room for follow-up questions and discussion. The audience was interested in differences between female and male leadership, barriers while becoming a female leader and in what it was that made a great leader. To conclude the discussion, our panelists all gave one piece of final advice. Anoesjka for example advised us to also celebrate all the little successes and Carien pointed out that for gender equality to become true we have to believe in it and hold it up. After the discussion the students had the chance to have one-on-one chats with our panelists.

‘Female Leadership’ became a buzzword in our society – especially today at the International Women’s Day.

Study Trip to London and Cambridge

Study Trip to London and Cambridge

February 7 – February 9

Our study trip to London started very early on Thursday morning – we met at Rotterdam Central at 6.15h to catch our flight to London Gatwick at around 9:00h. After the check-in at our hostel – right next to Hyde Park – we split our group of 17 participants into smaller groups and started exploring the city center of London. Besides the London Eye, we visited Buckingham Palace and London’s Tower Bridge. Afterwards, we visited ‘Founder’s Factory’. The company is an incubator and accelerator for start-ups and young companies making it especially interesting for our RSM Honours Students. To conclude our first day in London we enjoyed dinner in a restaurant offering contemporary Italian food. The next morning, we took the train to Cambridge. In a guided tour we discovered the renown colleges of Cambridge University, for instance Trinity and King’s College. Subsequently, we were given the chance to listen to a presentation and ensuing Q&A of a member of the admission's office of Cambridge University. Benedict Probst, current PhD candidate in Cambridge and alumnus of the Grand Challenges Honours Programme, made this possible for us. Benedict himself also gave us a very personal insight into studying at a world leading University and inspired some of us to strive further. Eventually, after an exciting day in Cambridge we rounded off our last night in London by exploring the world city’s nightlife. Saturday was already the day of our departure back to Schiphol Airport and Rotterdam. Before leaving, however, we still had some time to discover London’s famous shopping mall Harrods and went for a walk through the city’s beautiful embassy district. The study trip to London and Cambridge brought together a diverse cohort of Honours Students, made us mingle and bond. It was a great experience!

“Amazing conversations with amazing people in two amazing cities” - Thymo ter Doest, alumni of the RSM Honours Programme

The former Prime Minister in an interactive Guest Lecture

16:00 - 18:30 | Honours Lounge

On January 28,we were honored to host an interactive Lecture with Prof. Dr. Jan Peter Balkenende, who was the Dutch prime minister from 2002 – 2010.

Before starting our discussion with him, also the new Dean of the Honours Academy, Dr. Hub Zwart, introduced himself to us. By doing so, he presented some of the core values of the Honours Academy.

Our lecture with Prof. Dr. Balkenende started with a short reflection: back in the days, courses at the EUR were only taught in Dutch. Germans, for instance, had to study Dutch first before being able to give or attend a lecture in the Netherlands. That’s hard to believe at our international campus nowadays.
Afterwards, the former prime minister was very interested in our opinions and gathered our input for topics we would like to talk about. Eventually, we discussed issues ranging from today’s education system to European integration and the Sustainable Development Goals.
The Honours Students fired questions at Prof. Dr. Balkenende, who was very willing to answer all of them. Also, the students were very interested in personal experiences Balkenende made as a prime minister such as his work-life-balance or dealing with other world leaders.
Additionally, Prof. Dr. Balkenende let us reflect about people who inspire us and even gave us some ‘life hacks’.
After a great and very informative lecture, we concluded with some drinks and snacks. It was a great and inspirational talk – thank you Prof. Dr. Balkenende!

Welcome Back Reception - 18/1/2019

18:00 - 20:30 | Honours Lounge

On the 18th of January, we invited all members of the HonEURs Association to the Honours Lounge. The occasion was to see each other again after the winter break and exchange some stories of our vacation.
Since some Honours Programmes only started in January, we could also welcome many new members to the association- the overarching ‘Grand Challenges’ Honours Programme or the Law Honours Programme had only recently started, for instance.
Another highlight of the evening was to see almost the entire Board again after their exchange semester. The Board Members warmly welcomed all active and passive members of the association – finally now in person.

In short, it was a nice coming together and kick-off into the new year 2019. We hope to see you all again soon at our interactive lecture with the former Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende!

Our Merry HonEURS Christmas Dinner - 07/12/2018

18:00 - 20:00 | Restaurante Old Scuola

The Sinterklaas of the HonEURs Association was very generous to our Honours Students. For a small contribution around 20 students from many different of the Honors Programs at the Erasmus University came together and enjoyed a 3-course-menu at ‘Old Scuola’ close to Oostplein. For starters, Old Scuola served pizza bread with prosciutto, salami and cheese. As the name of the restaurant indicates, everything was very traditional Italian food. The main dish was pizza and for the last round – Tiramisu – we changed the seat order to really have a chance to get to know everyone. Even though some students were pressured by exams, the Christmas Dinner provided an opportunity to relief stress and dive a little bit into the Christmas Spirit. The pre-Christmas atmosphere also had a tangible aspect: every honours received a tailormade Christmas Card (Thank you Lorena!!). Everyone had the opportunity to get to know or meet again other students of our association. Thanks to everyone for making it such an amazing event and Merry Christmas!

15:30 - 17:00 | Cambridge Innovation Center

On November 22, the HonEURs Association had the chance to visit Europe’s first Venture Café. Designed after the American model, the non-profit organization is a physical place that brings people with an entrepreneurial mindset together. We were overwhelmed by the size of Venture Café: it extends over an area of 8000m² and hosts more than 200 companies – amongst which are 70% start-ups. Besides that, an atmosphere of global connectedness prevails with people from all over the world coming together. Everybody is welcome! Anoesjka Imambaks, Venture Café’s executive director, guided our tour and told us about the organization’s ‘three I’s’: Inspiration, Interaction and Innovation. Every Thursday, Venture Café opens its doors for weekly gatherings. Both talents and entrepreneurs come together to share knowledge, stories, and inspiration.

“Even though it was my first time at the Venture Cafe, I was already able to set up some very valuable connections.”- Thom Uildriks, RSM Honours Programme After an amazing tour and great impressions, we were invited to some free drinks at the Thursday-Gathering. Thank you very much having us, Venture Café!

OFFICIAL KICK-OFF 2018-2019 - 02/11/2018

18:00 - 20:00 | Campus Woudestein Polak 3-06

On October 24, the HonEURs Association invited Tom Marshall, consultant at Deloitte and founder of "Extraordinary Life", to give one of his inspiring workshops. Tom explained to us how important it is to pursue our passions in life and made us actively reflect on them: what did we enjoy doing when we were kids? What can we do easily that is tough for others?

He also asked us to consider our future and think about where we want to see ourselves in some time from now.

To officially kick-off the new academic year, we organized a come-together in the Honours Lounge at Campus Woudestein. While having snacks and drinks, honours students and alumni of different Honours Programmes came together and got to know each other.

Our Ambassador of the Medical Honours Programme, Thomas Pereira Horta, and our Events Manager, Lorena Nieuwenhoven, shared their experiences from last year about being a member and officially welcomed everybody in the name of the HonEURs Association.

The evening was accompanied by the "people Bingo" game. While mingling, we got to know some interesting, but also amusing facts about each other. The lucky winner was honoured with a little price.

It was a nice gathering with great conversations and experience sharing!

Tom Marshall- THE INNER BEAST - 24/10/2018

18:00 - 20:00 | Campus Woudestein Polak 3-06

On October 24, the HonEURs Association invited Tom Marshall, consultant at Deloitte and founder of "Extraordinary Life", to give one of his inspiring workshops. Tom explained to us how important it is to pursue our passions in life and made us actively reflect on them: what did we enjoy doing when we were kids? What can we do easily that is tough for others?

He also asked us to consider our future and think about where we want to see ourselves in some time from now.

"At first I thought I had already heard about these statements and visions. However, Extraordinary Life gave truly inspiring and unexpected twist to them. That made me think twice about myself and my opportunities."

                            -Pauline Liephout, RSM Honours Programme

Finding our "inner beast" turned out to be different than expected as well. We do not have a monster sitting inside us, but talents and qualities that help us achieving our goals. To this end, we coupled and set three quantifiable goals for the coming month; let's hope we can all achieve them!

"What an inspiring event! By combining our talents and passions, we are now all ready to unleash our inner beast! Let the magic happen ;)!"

              - Thomas Pereira Horta, Medicine Brand Ambassador

18:45 - 21:00 | Room T3-07, Erasmus University

People tell us that we should work with what we love, but how can we find this out? And once we discover this, what tangible steps can we take to make this a reality?

The HonEURs Association invited Tom Marshall to present Extraordinary Life: Pursuing Your Passions! Through the special combination of continuous reflection and life experimentation, he inspired us to begin an exciting journey of self-discovery. We learned how to identify our passions and gained the confidence to release our chains and pursue them!

Tom Marshall has so far impacted hundreds of people, including executive leaders at Deloitte and now he has impacted us as well!

Thank you all for coming!

#metoo Discussion! - 10/04/2018

18:00 - 20:00 | Room 1-20 (Polak Building), Erasmus University

#metoo is shaking the world these days. Whether media, politics, education, sports, or any other field, shocking stories come to light. But what about the backgrounds of the debate? How can we teach others to deal with such sensible issues?

On the 10th of April we raised awareness of the problem. Two amazing speakers shined light on different perspectives on the matter:

  • Shirin Musa: Chair and Founder of ‘Femme for Freedom’, an organization that strives for marital freedom and equality between women and men.
  •  Dr. Vidhi Chaudhri: Assistant Professor in the Department of Media and Communication at Erasmus University Rotterdam.

At the end of the event, there was room for a Q&A as well.

Next to HonEURs members, we welcomed other students to the event as well. A total of €75 was raised during the event and has been fully donated to women's charity.

Explore Holacracy & ONE15! - 19/02/2018

17:15 - 18:45 | Room C2-6 (Theil Building), Erasmus University

Holacracy is an organizational system with NO managers. All team members have an equal voice and there are no pre-defined roles. It is possible that this way of working could be the next hype in businesses.

Companies such as and Zappos have already successfully implemented holacracy in some of their teams. more and more companies claim that it is going to be the next big thing. The company ONE15 has adopted holacracy in its entire organization and taught us all about it on the 19th of February!

The event finished with a Q&A session, after which we and ONE15 went to Café in de Smitse for some drinks. It was an amazing event where we learned more about this non-traditional way of doing business!

18:00 - 20:30 | Erasmus Pavilion

20:30 - 22:00 | Café in de Smitse

For our kick-off, we wanted to change things up a bit and offer the honours students and alumni the opportunity to get to know each other with better events, in different settings!

That is why, in the first time of many interfaculty events, we invited you to join us and, in teams, discuss globally relevant and controversial issues from different perspectives as a fun, energizing way to get to know each other. No prior debating experience was necessary. The debates were followed by exciting rounds of faculty vs. faculty beer pong at Café in de Smitse.

It was a competitive night with heated discussions and exciting beer pong games!
